Birding in Odzala often starts at Mboko, a perfect place for birdwatching in the Congo. The area is a mix of forest and open savanna, giving visitors a chance to see a wide variety of birds in one spot. From the moment you arrive, bird calls and flashes of colour create an exciting atmosphere for both beginners and experienced birders.
The river behind the lodge is one of the highlights. Guests often spot the Shining-blue Kingfisher darting across the water or the Violet-backed Sunbird feeding in tall vegetation. These species are easy to see from the veranda, making Mboko a relaxing but rewarding birding base.
In the nearby savanna, the Blue-breasted Bee-eater and Red-necked Spurfowl are common sights. Lucky visitors may even catch Forbes’s Plover. Well-marked forest paths and a boardwalk linking Mboko to Lango make exploring simple, with plenty of chances to find typical forest birds.
Together, Mboko and the Lekoli River provide one of the best introductions to birding in Odzala. Every walk offers new encounters, making this part of the park an ideal starting point for birdwatching adventures.
