Mountain gorillas are one of the two subspecies of the Eastern gorilla and the rarer of the two. They remain among the most iconic animals of Rwanda’s biodiversity. Once on the edge of extinction, they have rebounded thanks to years of dedicated conservation work. Today, more than 700 live in the Volcanoes range alone, and the total population, including Bwindi, is thought to have reached around 1,100 by 2023.
Trekking to see them is an experience like no other. Some hikes are tough and climb steep forest trails, while others are shorter and easier. Either way, walking through their habitat gives visitors a chance to step into the unique world of mountain and afro-alpine forests.
The encounters themselves are unforgettable. These gentle giants, so close to us in behavior and expression, leave lasting impressions on anyone who meets them. Every trek is different — sometimes playful, sometimes quiet, always surprising. Since 2012 I have been photographing the gorillas, and each visit still brings fresh challenges and new images.
Below are a series of black-and-white portraits from many of these treks.
